| Recreation opportunities abound in the nearby Medicine Bow National Forest.
There are downhill ski facilities in the Snowy Range of the Medicine Bow
Mountains. The higher elevations contain hundreds of lakes, and mountain
streams and lakes are stocked with rainbow and brook trout. The U.S. Forest Service (307-745-3200) maintains camping and picnicking sites. Horseback riding, hiking and backpacking are popular pastimes. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. Rock formations are located along Middle Crow Creek in areas named Devil's Playground, Turtle Rock, and Vedauwoo Glen. Vedauwoo is a Native American word meaning "earth born spirits." Formed during the Ice Age and sculpted by the erosive forces of wind and water, the rocks provide a varied landscape that is popular for horseback riding among its numerous trails. Other recreation sites include Happy Jack Recreation Area and Curt Gowdy State Park. The park, named for a native Wyomingite and sports caster, features granite towers and rocky soils. |
